With less than five months to go until the November presidential elections, a slew of recent polls show President Trump losing ground in key battleground states as well as in states once thought safely in the red column.

Overall, the president’s job approval is down to 42.1 points, the lowest since October 2019. Furthermore, Trump trails his presumptive challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden, by 8 percent on average.

The reasons for Trump’s drop in the polls are at least twofold. One, voters disapprove of his handling of the Coronavirus outbreak with more than 54 percent of the electorate disapproving of Trump’s response. The second reason is voters’ disapproval of Trump’s reaction to the police killing of Georg Floyd and the protests it triggered.

The recent drop in polls has led to reactions that may be described as at least unusual. The Trump campaign sent a cease and desist letter to CNN asking them to retract a recent poll that showed Trump trailing Biden by 14 percent. Meanwhile, Biden has voiced his conviction that the military would escort Trump out of the White House in case Trump loses the November election but doesn’t concede.
