Populism and populists are still very much on the minds of political scientists grappling with the question of “What is democracy?” in the wake of the recent surge for populist candidates and parties in democratic countries around the world. At the annual conference of the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA), one of the major professional organizations for political scientists that was held in early April in Chicago, researchers were debating populism in numerous panels and roundtable events. Presentations of original research papers covered all aspects of populism, including the history of populism and the consequences of populists in government. While most papers dealt with explaining the support for populist candidates and parties, a number of contributions also discussed counter-strategies to populist mobilization.
